Early period of music videos

Marilyn Monroe - Diamonds is a girls best-friend

How is it recognizable as a music video?

This video incorporates colour and settings.
They use a piece from the film and turn it into a music video; this is done to highlight her performing the song. Another reason why we could tell it was a music video was because lips-syncing was incorporated; even though this was a section taken from a film it can also be seen as a live performance. We can see that the way the men are looking at her, they are trying to sexualize her; this could be a form of voyeurism.

What was innovative/important?

20 years later we can see that this has inspired Madona as she made her own music called Material Girl. This is very significant as it was inter-textual for future music videos. Also there are performers dancing, this also means it is a music video because it incorporates choreography.

One thing i find really interesting is that, they took out it out from a film and made it seem like it was a brand new music video, it was almost as if they were experimenting. They also used different types of shots; we can see that close up is used here multiple times to state the fact that the music video all evolves arounds Marilyn.

What technological or cultural change happened during this time?

During this time which was 1940’s you could not just get up and go to the cinema and go and watch a performance the only place that was available at the time was going to the theater to go and watch what you want, where as now in current time you could see what you need from anywhere because the technology is more developed.

Batcat - Jetpack

What was innovation/ important about this music video
Batcat was band that recorded instruments such electric guitars - jetpack 1932 was innovation because it was the first video ever made where television was invented in the 1925. Also the video was famous for their experiment with electromagnetism. Also the batcat-jetpack music video was animation and was first aircraft. This was recorded produced by gramophone.
[1]Jetpack composes, records, and performs the guitar dominated instrumental music known as surf or surf rock, that was a music industry phenomenon of the early 1960s. Although it had retained a following, especially in Southern California, surf experienced a world-wide revival in the 1990s. This means that they perform live as was also known surf rock. In that time surf rock was quite popular. In the music video you see you see footage from out of space but however the band which was shown few time throughout the music video.
How is this recognisable as a music video?
This is recognisable as a music video because it was relatable to a genre which is surf rock even though there was no lip syncing there was story behind it which is space and aircrafts. It shows footage of different shots relating to the music also the music video has effects and uses close ups. It shows that it is a music video has no dialog and shows animation and music stick over it. During the video at 2:15 it has some text which is advertising space making young ages see this and what to experience it.
What technological or cultural change happened during this time?
There were various changes happen during this period of time for example in the 1932 they were more music video being made. Also lip synicing is being is being more occurred and live performces are being as a music video. However, music we develop over time as we go down the 1930-1960s music videos were in colour.

Music videos have been around for as long as I can remember, they are specifically used to describe or depict a narrative of story essentially a short film which advertises the music itself. Firstly starting off with 1930s music was starting to change featuring different music videos for songs.

As I was researching songs from the 60s I found a track from Nancy Sinatra called these boots are made for walking this title was released in the early 60s it was one of the first music videos to actually feature color. There are many ways this video is different, it uses sexualization a lot more as it focuses on the females legs. This also has a very good dance and rhythm to the video. This is one of the first music videos to actually spark an era of female sexualised themes.

It has a very interesting video as it is set in a studio with just a group of girls dancing in front of the camera. It uses Mise en scene to its effect and it also uses a wide range of dance moves.

This is the link to the video as I said this is a very interesting track as music was not able to be downloaded because there was no internet, this sold successfully due to the amount of records

What was innovative/important?

This music video is important because this is one of the earliest music videos as music videos began around the 1930s. It was shown in theatre in 1932. This music video was from a American two-reel short film, St. Louis Blues, which starred Bessie Smith as it is based on her song.

How is it recognizable as a music video?

Even though it's a short film, you can see a live performance of a band which make the music video into a performance-based music video, likely in a restaurant or a bar as you can see waiters walking around and the bartender serving alcoholic beverages at the bar etc. You can see the artist lip-syncing to the lyrics, you could also see the audience lip-syncing as well. No dialogue. As this is one of the earliest music video, it is one of the first music video to do lip-syncing. They used camera shots such as, long shot and medium close up.

What technological or cultural change happened during this time?

At the time, this music video only could be seen in theatre/cinema back in 1932. We are now able to access almost any music almost anywhere now (2016), that shows how much technology has changed. This music video is very different to modern day music videos because it is in black and white, you can tell it is old.

Task 1B

50 Cent
Major Artist

For many years 50 cent has portrayed to his fans and to the world for being a ‘’ Rich rapper’’. We can see this through some of his music videos for example in one of his songs ‘’ Window shopper’’ it’s all about buying expensive things inside the store and driving the fastest cars and expensive cars. This is what he makes the audience think his lifestyle is like when in actual fact his life style is not exactly like that, there is something called Hyper reality, this means something which gives an false image or something that is over exaggerated. We know that he does not even know the cars he drives they are either hired or borrowed, but let’s not get it wrong, hiring a car like that would still be into the 100 thousands. Really and truly 50cent has been portraying a false image of himself has he owes Millions in debt to the government. He is in debt by more than 28million Dollars. Someone who creates a false image of themselves in Music videos, more or less wants to keep you occupied with the music videos that you do not even notice what happens in reality. The fact that he was once in a record  label means he was earning loads of money, and this allowed him to tour around the world and do shows, and even earn more money, but yet somehow he is still able to be in dept.

Image
When looking at 50cent we can see that he portrays him self to be living the lifestyle and boasting
about the amount of money which he has, and the ability. in the picture below it shows the amount of money needed to buy a pair of trainers, and in the back ground we can see him giving off a cheeky smerk, almost as if to say ''thats nothing to me''
Budget and production
This music video fits into the 500K + CATEGORY, we can see this because firstly the amount the used for the car only was over 1 million, and then we have the editing and the crew, which would cost additional amount.

Audience
50cent as a Artist targets, a wild range of people. His music video is basically to show that nothing is too expensive this is giving hope to the fans. Audience are drawn to him because of the cars her drivers and the jewellery he wears, makes them wonna be like him.

Monetisation
when it comes to making money, he would get paid for allowing an advert to flow before the music video starts, also he gets paid through the amount of views he gets. He would have been paid according to the method of every 1000 views he gets, he gets paid 2 dollars.
views divided by 1000 x 2 =155,289.78

Indie Artist

EDEN- Drugs
Image
When we look at this music video, its really different to other types of music videos in terms of concept and visuals. We can see that eden portrays himself to be a hardworking and caring person who cares for close ones or for family rather. He's not seeing showing of money of some sort of any time of wealth. He is portraying the struggles in life and how everyday people would feel when overcoming these obstacles.

Budget and Production
I think this music video did not really cost much to make because the locations are very casual and they don't seem too posh for it to be able to cost a lot of money. i would say this music video cost around 20k because of the cheap locations and cheap costumes.

Audience
He's target audience is not teenagers, its more towards the adult and the elderly, because the visuals we saw in the music video reflect everyday life and these are things only adults and the elderly would have to face or would have already faced.

Monetisation
Because he had an advert at the start of his music video he would be paid some sort of money for allowing an ad to flo just before his music video. Also another way he would have been paid is by through youtube .

2 more skills

I am able to use spell check when needed in order to make sure that, what I am writing makes sense, spell check is very important it is the difference Between an A or C. Also I can use paragraphs rather than just making everything into one big piece of work, by doing that there is no space and the reader might get confused, but because I am able to use it at the correct times it allows my work to look more neat and easier to read because there are spaces diving the individual sections up. We can where I used spell check which was in my draft proposal where I had to check for mistakes and highlight, and then repost the Proposal but correcting the spelling mistakes and then submitting it as the final piece. For the paragraphs you can find my pre-production as evidence of me using paragraph to separate different titles.

Also I am very creative I would say, and this is because I am able to think about something and draw a draft of what I am thinking, another example of this is when I edited a video for an assessment, which was called ‘’ SHE ‘’. When I first started to edit the film I found out that, I was able to edit in continuity and I was doing rhythmic editing. I was being creative by using different shots to create mystery and to build up tension. The evidence for this is when I did the she video for my assessment and also when I edited my short film which I got a Merit on. I believe when you are creative it allows you to do things easier and make things without you making a lot of hard work.

Shortfilm Evaluation

I think me and my Partner did a very good with our pre-production planning for our short film, and the video its self was filmed and edited professionally, there were some things that could have been improved. The script was good it was very detailed and specific as to what was going to be said in the film and when it will be said, the storyboard again was very strong and clear, the only thing that was missing was the types of shots we would use for a particular scene.  The location we had at first, was very well recee’d for any hazards or threats that can endanger out film and the cast members, but we used our back up location, which was ideal for the film as well as the hotel we first had to do the film.

When it actually came down to shooting the film, there was a bit of tension because 2 of our team members were removed from our group, so it made things more difficult with just my partner and I, but at the end of the day we were able to pull it off. We did a prop check first to make sure that we had the camera and it was charged and working, and also checked on the props we had, to be fair the props could have been improved, like the smallest thing of just getting a mask for our character could have made the film 10 times better. Our Actors had been over script and knew their lines with so much accuracy, which enabled the day to go smoothly without wasting anytime on the script. The call sheet was rather effective because the Actors knew what time to meet and where they had to meet in order for the shoot to be able to proceed. We also used a LED light, but near the end of the shoot it died and we panicked a little bit, but we use an alternative source for light. We thought to use natural light, but if we used that it would have not made our film effective or convincing that it was a Horror. Also because 2 of our members where removed from the group, my partner and I were assigned things to do, which we was giving a short period of time to complete it, but we managed to get all the documents, script and storyboard handed in just in time.

The shots which we used were very good in my opinion, but we could have improved and added more close ups, because that is a significant shot, which gives us lots of effects and can create mystery and give off facial expressions. The reason why we used close ups is because it makes tension and the audience have to work out what is going on in the scene. Because there was a close of on the girl with the iPhone, by the camera focusing on her face you can tell that something was wrong. Overall I think that the way my partner and me tackled the challenges we faced was very effective and we was able to pull it off and produce a good short film with just the two of us.
