CO-OP Brief
A co-op brief is where there are
2 or more production companies that are employed by a client and given a brief
to work to. For example if the client decided he wanted a short film to be
made, one of the companies would take over the filming side of things and the
other company would take over the editing side of things, this enables 2
companies to work together to produce a final project for the client within the
set deadline. As there are 2 companies working on this brief it should be
easier and quicker and the deadline is expected to be met.
An Advantage of this type of brief is that there are 2 companies
working together therefore there would be less stress and it won’t be time
consuming.
The Disadvantage about this brief is that the two companies might not
come to an agreement on the idea, hence why the contract won’t be signed until
both parties are level and there is no tension.
Formal Brief
A formal brief is a brief which includes
information and specific detail about what the client expects from the assigned
company.
The Advantage of this is that everything is clear and set for the
companies therefore there would be no confusion on what is expected.
The Disadvantage is that, it’s a set
brief and everything needed has already been written down so there may not be
any chance to negotiate things. Also the client and employer may disagree on
various things which are listed in the brief.
Informal Brief
An informal brief is the opposite
to a formal brief. A Informal brief is verbally, this does not include any written
documents what so ever. There will be a conversation between the client and the
employer then they will come to an agreement.
The Advantage for an informal brief is that there aren’t really
any rules or regulations which have to be followed; this allows the employer to
be more flexible and add their own ideas.
The disadvantage for this type of
brief is that, because the employer knows that there aren’t really any rules
and regulation to follow they may try and produce cheap work, rather than
working to proessfional standards.
Commissions Brief
This brief is where a large media
company will employ another company to make and create the product for them,
and after the product has been made the bigger organization may go ahead to be
utilize the item for a client who will
pay the larger media organization for making the product and they could even
get a cut. The brief is not consulted between the media companies and the
client , however is consulted between the two media companies.
An Advantage of this would be that the larger company does not have to
do all the work, the work is split.
Disadvantage – Because there are two companies working on the same
project they could come to some disagreements and it might make the project come
to a standstill.
Tender Brief
This is when a customer will
publicize their brief and a production company will have a suggestion that they
will pitch to the client, there could be numerous pitches to the client from a
wide range of companies, so the client will then find the opportunity to pick
the best pitch/proposal that they think best suits their brief and offer the
employment to that production company.
An advantage of this is that the client would be able to hear many
ideas from a range of companies.
The disadvantage of this brief is that, there could be setbacks for the
companies which are not successful with their pitches and they could have
possibly spent money on their proposal, and lets assume the company was offered
work before hand but because they assume they would get their proposal across
to the client they denied that specific work. This means they would have to
start from scratch again.
Negotiated Brief
A Negotiated brief is when a
employer and a client come together to agree upon the brief of the project. For
example if there was a ident which the client wanted the employer to make, but
the employer noticed that 30 seconds for an ident was too short the employer
would then negotiate an alternative duration for which the ident should go on
for.
Advantage of this brief is that
it allows both the employer and client to be creative because they will both
have their input into the idea towards the brief, this also means that if they
are on the same level it is unlikely for there to be any complications in the
future.
The disadvantage of this brief is
when the employer actually negotiates the brief, and the client doesn’t like
the idea or they come to a disagreement this could result in the employer being
let go, and then the client would locate someone else who can work towards the
brief.
Contractual Brief
This is a contract is where a
media company would be employed by the client so that they can complete the
product in the brief to set rules and regulations which the media company has
to follow. If the media company decides not to face the rules and regulations
which have been set there may be legal actions which will have to take place.
Advantage they know exactly what
they are doing, and what it is they are going to be producing
Competitive Brief
This is where a client will set a
brief, and the brief will be accessible to all types of production companies,
the production companies will then complete the brief then the client has to
pick the best product that has been produced.
