Shot rev shot
Shot Reverse shot is, involves two characters having a conversation. You would have one character looking at the other, then we would have a reverse shot from that characters point of view. This is also known as continuity editing. The purpose of using short reverse shot to see character face whilst talking  instead focusing on one character when talking, by this you can see their emotions when talking and makes more interesting.
As we can see from 30 seconds in the use of Shot rev shot was used, as the camera is positioned from over the shoulders of each character. It also portrays the relationship between the two characters. Each time a person speaks it automatically cuts to the main objective. Shot rev shot was developed by Dw Griffith.

Cross- Cutting
Cross cutting also known as parallel editingis cutting between two different scenes that are happening at the same time. This technique was created and developed by D.W. Griffith. Cross-Cutting was first used in D.W Griffith's film "After many years" in 1908. The clip below shows an example of cross-cutting being used. The clip is from the film Quantum of Solace. In the scene, A man is being interrogated, the camera then cuts to another scene to show that somebody is approaching in a car. The purpose of Cross-Cutting is to show two important/relevant events in the story that are happening at the same time. Using Cross-Cutting makes the story of a film more interesting for audience. It also allows the audience to be introduced to new characters of the story.

Jump-cuts

Jump cuts were created in  1896 by Melies  he was filming a bus coming out of a tunnel and his camera film jammed when it started filming again it filmed a horse cart going by and when he watched the film a jump cut was created making the bus look like it transformed into the horse cart, he used this in is magical shows to show people disappearing. the purpose of using a jump cut is to cover up the mistakes or to make film science fiction also it is breaking continuity.

Jump cuts were usually used to create magically effects durine the 1800s but now in the present days jump cuts are been used to break continuity and therefore can fall under montage techniques. for example Royal Tenements in this scene they uses jump cut of the man shaving and making himself up.

Rhythmic editing

Rhythmic editing is a series of shot, an assembling of shots and/or sequences according to a rhythmic pattern of some kind, usually dictated by music. Eisenstein/Kuleshov  was the first to come up with rhythmic editing. This means that they can be rhythmic in a scene mostly rhythmic are use in an dramatic scene for example psycho film  the stabbing motion of him killing her, another example 'Hanna's Escape- Abort Abort!'  in this scene there was rhythmic of one of man walking towards Hanna and her shooting the dangerous people.

the purpose of using rhythmic in films to build up tension and drama in the scene by this it make more entertaining to views and also it creates mystery and suspense but in this case Hanna is using rhythmic out of anger.

Motivated cut: This is when a shot/ scene cuts to another scene to show an object or character that wast present in the previous frame. Its a mainstream style of editing as it doesn't break continuity, its normally used to create suspense or show conversations between two characters with different significant importance added to them in detail in those shots. The main purpose of the motivated cut is to actually make the viewers know what is going on it engages the viewers and also develops the drama it also uses a variety of different combinations of shot cutting at different pace and also following the action.

Point of View shot - This is a technique where it will show the scene from the characters point of view, so you can see the events from their perspective, allowing the audience to feel involved in the film because they can see it as if they are there.
The Point Of View shot is used here, it is done to show the current events taking place from one characters perspective. It is done to see the events from the eyes of the character.

Porcelain Rising

Porcelain Rising

The scene starts off by zooming into the girl, this suggesting something is moving towards her very slowly; it makes it seem like us the audiences are the ones who are creeping up on the girl. Straight away we can tell something bad is about to happen how? Because the zoom is highly significant and portrayed the meaning to us in an understandable way. Also by looking at her bed we can tell that her parents are rather stylish and creative. Her quilt is white, which suggest that she is pure and holy.

She has trouble sleeping; her father decides to lock up the toy. When we look at this toy, it looks like some type of clown, and clowns are portrayed to be ugly and crazy. This could be linked to the chucky movie where the toy came to live and started killing everyone. The toy looks like a demon, with the one eye and red plots on her cheeks and clothing. The makeup of this toy creates a nerve-racking atmosphere.
This imagine shows that the clown toy has more power and control over the other toys, as she is sitting down comfortably, and has her hands on the neck of two other toys, it’s like she’s trying to execute the other toys, as they are all lined up on the wall. This can also be known as a wide shot, as it shoes the object and the surroundings of the area/location and what’s around her. She is bigger than all the other toys which again make’s her more substantial to the other toys.

In this next section, the lighting portrays the father to seem as if he has two different sides to him. When the light flashes on him it makes the audience see a pure person almost like a angel, and as soon as the lighting goes off he is seen to be on a dark path, or towards the path to darkness as the light is not totally dark, it’s just a low-key lighting. You can see the two different sides below.
The lighting also constructs a mixed atmosphere, giving us different leads and making our mind change on things.

We can see that the father is very exasperated, through the close up shot. We can infer from this that many things are running on his mind. The fact that we can’t see his eyes and that he’s wearing a BLACK night wear, suggest the shadows were creeping him on him slowly, rather this was a sign that his daughter was going to get killed.

Most of the sounds in this film are diegetic-sounds, where as some soundtracks are Non-diegetic. For example the raining, is real this means everyone that is acting can hear it as It is a natural thing. But the sound effects can only be heard by the audience, this creates meaning and helps build up the scene. The thunder is used as a sign that something bad is about to happen.
In This next imagine, as she is hiding underneath the bed, it’s almost as if she has been abandoned as she is by herself, we could think that because her father is aware of the problems she’s having and may have wanted to possibly get rid of her, or just leave her because he is tired and has paid so much money to try and sort out this problem but it just simply isn’t working. The weather gives an unwelcoming atmosphere.

The girl is also seen to be friendly and having a warm heart this imagine shows us the impression.

This also links back to when the girl was underneath  the bed by herself, we can see the father walking away from the bedroom, this suggest that he is leaving her alone and keeping the distance between each other, this is used through  a long shot.

If we look closely at this image, it does not really appear to be a toy, take a look at the neck, it looks humanlike, this could suggest this is another little girl hiding behind a joka’s mask to come and seek revenge or something which the girl has done to her.

Studying this last imagine, if we stare at the background we can see paths of light and darkness, it is almost as if both elements are having a constant battle, on who is going to win the man? Or who is going to win the girl. This short film is a thriller once again, as it involves crime and exciting plots on a little girl, trapping her in a twisted twilight world.

The Rattler

The Rattler
This short film is a horror; it creates a lot on tension and anxiety for the audience. We can see at the start it says ‘’The Rattler’’ the fact that the title is in red, suggest something bad is about to occur. Red signifies the devil, therefore this only means something forsaken is about to take place in this house.

When we look at this next imagine, it looks like a flower that has not yet opened up. The fact that its red as well also stimulates a sense of death and fear. There is a black star at the top of the opening, this tells us that the dark sides are trying to prevent the flower from opening, furthermore there are like needles inside the flower, this may have been used to paralyze it.

Looking at this scene there are a range of different props in her possession. She has a apple mac , mouse , glass cup , notepad , a phone. The most important prop here is the computer, as it creates suspense amongst the audience as she gets an unknown call. This may get the audience excited or worried that something unusual is about to happen. When we look at the painter in the background there is a red slash going across the board, this signifies a deep cut, this links back to the title ‘’Rattler’’ as he slashes off skin and eats them.

In this scene lighting helps creates a sense of atmosphere. low-key lighting is used here, where it is not very dark or very light.
we can see in the background black knifes this may suggest the weapon the Rattler used to attack her. The fact that its black also suggest fear and tension, as knifes can be used for a range of different things. Also there is a strong sense of light coming from her computer this is called naturalistic lighting; this makes the settings more realistic.

After she received the phone call saying someone is behind her door, we get a extreme close up on the door handle as the rattler is trying to break free and enter the room. At the rate the door handle is moving we can gather an insight of this person, we can tell they are rather violent, determined to enter and also that they have muscular strength to be able to break in at a fast pase. The is also another close up on when the doorknob is at her feet, this shows off the Rattlers muscular strength and it creates agitation and concentration within the audience as they know something bad is about to occur. This can suggest that the girl is trapped in closed doors and has nowhere to run or to even hide. Lastly there is a shot of the Rattler through the door hole, this makes a jumpy atmosphere within the audience as, it was a surprise, the director did this purposely to terrify the audience and capture them in a terrifying bubble.

The smiling man

The Smiling man
The scene starts with a walking faint sound effect; this immediately leaves us in wonder as we do not know where he is walking to because the camera is a close-up/waist up.

The Smiling Man character has not yet been indentified, this suggests that he is mysterious; the fact that he is mysterious creates tension amongst the audience. The fact that it is night time portrays this character is up to no good. As it is dark this character can be linked to evil. This type of shot is also known as an over the shoulder shot.

Now if we look carefully at this image, we can see there is a lowkey sign of lighting, as we look closer and beyond the smiling man everything else is pitch black, this suggest that the character is staring into his death as the surroundings beyond the smiling man are not seeable. This could also tell us that the smiling man who is from the dark world has come to take this teenager who is in the light, and drag him back into the darkness which he came from, it’s almost as if the devil wants to take him away and missuse him.

Also if we look at the trees on the right side, we can see that their roots and stumps are black! This suggest the tree’s have been be corrupted by the gloominess of the underworld. Take a look closer we can see the leaves are still green, as they are still in the light, this could be a sign suggesting Angles are protecting the young teenager. This image is like a Twilight adventure.
The director did this scene in a specific way, to make the audience feel involved. As he is running away from the smiling man, we can see there is a hand held camera being used to film this area, and to make it look for realistic the camera also goes side to side as if we were the ones running at that very moment in time. This is shown through contact of the eye, what we would see on a everyday basics through our own eyes.

The sound in this short film is rather non-diegetic , this is because the character cannot hear the sounds, only us the audience can hear the sounds. The sound creates meaning and understanding through the way the sound is composed and presented at different stages of the short film. If we look towards the end of the film, we see him sprinting to try and break away from the deluded smiling character, as a sound effect of a heart beat comes on this is linked to the audience as it keeps them in suspense and creates tension as they do not know if he escaped from him. He then looks around him slowly ‘’looks left’’ looks right’’ and the smiling man appeared from nowhere, suddenly a disturbed instrumental comes on, almost like a violent guitar. This suggests a twisted lifestyle also a mental person that has gone crazy. Also in

The director made the right choice of costume for the smiling man. The brown suit with the black hat and black shoes makes him seem deluded. The movement of this character is rather unusual; this is what makes him significant as he is not a normal person, the audience would be more interested in him than the teen age boy, as he is strange and unexplainable. The location created meaning towards the story. The location was a long street, very isolated which left the teenager venerable. In-addition his movement was mostly side to side, also like a snake and snakes are represented to be the devil! As they wobble side to side.

We can see his facial expression, through the use of an extreme close up. Even though he is not saying anything but the way his face is placed, we can infer a lot of meaning through it. He looks terrified and rather confused as to what is going on. He does not believe what he is seeing

This is image is 180 degree rule that pits both characters on the screen one on the right and the other the left as we can see in the screen grab above the camera has taken a shot from behind the character which is called an over the shoulder shot it has also not crossed the 180 line and thereby not breaking the 180 degree rule allowing continuity to flow and the editor has aligned shots so they focus on one character and then back keeping the 180 degree rule.
